Jacklyn Downing uses textile art to focus on our universal human connection. Common themes include memory, nature, women's work, and rites of passage. The use of written words and found objects create evocative invocations of myth. This results in wall-hangings, wearable art, and sculpture demonstrating the seen and the unseen “labor” of women, including work done in the home, in the workplace, and in service to the ongoing sustenance of the human race. Jacklyn Downing’s educational background is in graphic design and interior design. She has exhibited in group and solo shows in the United States. Her work has been spotlighted in Berks County Living. Jacklyn collaborates with educators in combining art with a multidisciplinary curriculum to enrich the classroom.
Make it personal?
I’m from a small town in Western Pennsylvania where I spent many hours drawing and creating art as a child and young adult. After high school, I attended Bradford School in Pittsburgh, earning a Degree in Graphic Design. I then worked professionally in a variety of artistic and business roles. These experiences in art, design, business, buying, and management paved the road for my next degree, which was a diploma in interior design from New York Institute of Art and Design. In addition to this formal education, I continually increase my knowledge through classes in design, color, art, and alternative healing arts.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time baking (because I am a mediocre cook, at best), travel (because I’m a Sagittarius and I want to see as much of the world as I can!), and reading (mostly non-fiction because I’m a bit nerdy, but I do love a magical fiction book).
